Spalted Maple Burl Em Drone Flute
Here's an interesting piece of spalted maple burl that has made a flute that is a beauty to behold. This flute has a bit of a "dark" tone with just a hint of "breathiness". This is due to the lightness and porosity of the wood. If this sort of tone appeals to you, it could be a nice addition to your collection. It's not the more focused sound that most of my wooden flutes have. Also, since it's an Em, it is a bit of a handful. This flute is about 24" long with a 1 5/8" spread between the last three holes. This spread can be a challenge for someone with small or stiff hands.
All that being said, if you're looking for a beautiful, mellow flute this could make a fine addition to your collection. If you add the right amount of pressure while breathing into the drone side, it will jump up an octave, thus giving it two notes instead of one for your drone.
